The Holy City and the Residence of the Church

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.”

The Millennial Kingdom – the holy city and the residence of the church (Revelation 21v9-27, 22v1-5)

  • Great and high – this is a walled city – stressing the security of the city – it is impenetrable to any malign influence.

  1. The foundations of the wall (verse 14)
  • The number of the foundations

  • The dimension of the city – 12,000 furlongs = 1,500 miles

  • Wall – jasper

  1. The temple of the city (verse 22)?
  • There is no temple, as the city is the dwelling place of “the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb”
  1. The light of the city (verse 23)
  • No need for the sun and moon
  • The glory of God lightens it
  • The Lamb is the light of the city
  1. The administration of the city (verses 24-26)
  • The nations of the saved walk according to the light from the city
  • Earth’s rulers bring their honour and glory to the city
  • Gates remain open
  1. The inhabitants of the city (verse 27)
  • Nothing that defiles shall enter
  • Neither anything abominable shall enter
  • Nothing that makes a lie shall enter
  • But, those written in the Lamb’s book of life
  1. The river of the city (22 verse 1)
  • The water of the river- water of life
  1. The tree and the fruit (verse 2)
  • The tree of life
  • The fruit of the tree
  1. The throne and the city (verse 3)
  • The throne of God and of the Lamb is in the city
  1. The lamb’s servants (verses 4-5)
  • His servants shall serve Him – their occupation
  • They shall see His face – their nearness
  • His name on their foreheads – their conformity to the Lamb
  • The Lord God giveth them light- their illumination
  • They shall reign for ever and ever – their activity
